What an awesome time to be in Verbier!

The 2013/14 season is now in full swing and our new Chalet Maurine has been welcoming guests since the start of December. Kirsty and Andi, our chalet team, have been providing excellent service to our guests and serving delicious meals since the chalet opened, and have passed on the following about their experiences in Verbier so far……

Before we made the decision to move here back in November we had heard many glowing reports on what a lively party town Verbier is, with its range of bars, pubs and clubs and a good mix of crazy and classy apres ski. Yes they were right; but recently my husband Andi and I have learnt about the other, more serene side to this Swiss resort.

After a hectic start at Chalet Maurine with the first two months being somewhat of a blur we discovered we had a few days between bookings when we had this beautiful chalet all to ourselves… and what perfect timing it was.

I woke up on a snowy Monday morning to watch Jenny Jones win bronze in the snowboard slope style, the first ever British medal on snow, at the Sochi winter Olympics. That day turned into my first ever medal winning ride on snow too (well, in my head anyway). The snow stopped and the sun came out shining. That afternoon was the best day I have ever had on the slopes. Perfect snow with 10cm of fresh powder and bluebird skies. Oh-and hardly anyone else in sight. As blissful as this was it did leave me wondering was this some kind of secret??? With the excitement of the Olympics, perfect snow conditions and such dreadful weather back home why on earth is it so quiet in the resort? Sitting in the hot tub with a glass of prosecco at the end of this perfect day I really had to pinch myself.

Leaving Cornwall and our very happy life working at Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Cornwall was no easy decision for either of us but this was the kind of day to remind us that is was a brilliant move. Working there for a combined 10 years it definitely shaped who we are and what we do, Jamie’s rustic Italian style will stay with us forever and is certainly a central part of what we do here at Chalet Maurine. Andi, who was classically French trained, is now fully Italian inspired. His food is always local, seasonal, fresh, cooked from the heart and where possible served on Jamie-esque sharing platters to encourage sociable dining. We were very much reminded of this as we sat down with friends to dinner…

Home made burrata, Tarocco blood orange, toasted almonds and rocket salad to start. Followed by a rotolo of pumpkin, ricotta and chestnuts, sage and lemon butter. For main Val d’Herens (local breed) beef fillet wrapped in lardo di Colonnata, roast garlic polenta, cavalo nero and fresh horseradish. The best bit… chocloate fondont with a salt caramel center, spiced plums and creme fraish. For those who could manage it gorgonzola, pears and walnuts.

IMG_20140210_202936 IMG_20140210_213928

As for myself, being a trained sommelier and restaurant supervisor, I am loving matching wines to Andi’s dishes.. He keeps me on my toes with some of his dishes but I revel in the challenge. No two meals are the same and that’s what keeps every day fresh for us both – and our guests.

Running the chalet together is a dream. We’re both passionate about fresh new snow, clean mountain air, roaring log fires… and of course amazing food, fine wines and service to match.

As fun as having this place to ourselves is, I hope the Winter Olympics spur people to book, whether it be for a family holiday or corporate event for a long weekend; the secret of Chalet Maurine and Verbier should be shared. For those who have heard about Verbier’s legendary apres ski, a combination of Le Rouge, Farinet and the Farm will not disappoint! But I’m also happy to share my insider tips about the peaceful side of Verbier I have learnt to love: yoga sessions at the brand new ‘Wholey Cow’ studio, freshly made sushi at Nomad Sushi and martini bar, or even better than that, hot tub drinks followed by my husband’s cooking!

Fit for the Slopes – an experts opinion!

St Anton Skiing

The winter isn’t far away and to really get the most out of your ski or boarding holiday you should turn up fit and ready to take on the slopes. Skiing isn’t “just a holiday” you need to be in a relatively good state of fitness to help avoid injury, stay fit for the whole duration of your holiday, help to push yourself that little bit further and really improve or explore areas you would never usually explore. All this, and also bare in mind you will be indulging in some pretty fancy mountain food like Tyroler Grostl or Tartiflette (delicious carb overload for the mountain!) and some fun apres ski beers and mulled wines!

Marcus Nilsson, a good friend of Kaluma after spending several seasons in the Alps knows all about the fitness industry and is now a high profile Fitness Trainer at Equinox ( in Kensington, London, training the stars! He also writes for Tatler magazine and suggests this circuit for the perfect build up to the winter season and your ski holiday…hopefully with Kaluma Travel!

Format: Circuit
Sets – 4 rounds
Repetitions – 15 (could be each side for certain exercises)
Rest Intervals – 60 seconds

Lateral Lunges – (stand shoulder width apart with feet, take a big step out to the side with one leg and come deep down by bending the moving knee. Push up from the deep position with the heel, back to starting position)

Single leg bridges – (lay on your back, bend both your knees to 90 degreees and lift one leg off floor. Place your arms out to the side now lift your hip up by pressing from the foot that still is on the floor and squeeze your glutes until you reach your highest point. Slowly lower the hip back to the floor and repeat)

Slow bodyweight squats to 90 degrees – (stand shoulder width apart with feet, slowly squat down from uprise position to 90 degrees in 5 seconds down. Slowly come up from 90 degrees to uprise position in 5 seconds)

Side Plank with internal external rotation – (lay on your side, propped up and balancing on bent one arm. Raise the other arm into the air. Gradually move round passing the arm through the gap between your chest and other arm and tap the floor. Bring your arm back to starting position, repeat 15 times on each side)

Lateral jumps from side to side – X 45 sec (stand feet almost together and a slight bend in your knee. Now jump from one side to the other and land with both feet as far away you can. Jump straight back to start position and repeat for 45 sec)

All of the above exercises can be done at home or in the gym. To challenge different fitness levels, you can use equipment normally found at a fitness center such as ViPR tubing, dumbells or Barbells.

Go Luxury this Ski Season!

Chalet Le Chardon

Many people would see skiing as an adventure holiday. One that requires a bit of physical exertion and an element of adventure exploring new places, challenging yourself and putting your body through its paces and not just on the ski slopes.

This holds much appeal for skiers all over the world and of course they come from a variety of backgrounds, all with their own tastes. That is why you will find a ski resort suitable for most people’s needs from those who just want to put on their skis in the morning and blast around all day to those who want a bit more luxury.

If it is luxury skiing you are after, then you can find it in most resorts these days but some resorts are in themselves considered luxury destinations. These include, Courchevel in France, St Anton in Austria and Verbier in Switzerland to name a few. We are all about luxury at Kaluma, which is why we have carefully selected luxurious chalets in luxurious resorts and have people on the ground who live there and know the locals and the surroundings.

In resorts like these you can find virtually anything you like to give your ski holiday a bit of extra sparkle from top quality spas to Michelin star restaurants and of course shops that would grace the likes of St Tropez and Monte Carlo.

The hard bit is to match your skiing requirements, accommodation and leisure needs and for that you need some experts to help you. Putting together a bespoke tailor made ski holiday requires experience and understanding to piece together all the elements to make it special and seem effortless to the guest. We have been doing that for quite some time.

It may not even have to cost what only the elite few can afford either. Luxury can be accessible to many people if their holiday is planned out right. Booking directly may seem like a good idea to some but it rarely works out in their favour and they miss the advantages of having in-resort concierges that can make a luxury holiday even more special.

So, if its luxury you fancy, then give us a call and we can talk through your options in a huge variety of resorts and you can experience a luxurious adventure.

Ski Season Countdown Begins

It’s a very exciting time of year for us at Kaluma as you can imagine. We are on the cusp of the new ski season and have been very busy preparing to welcome our guests into our chalets. Of course this year we have our Verbier Chalet in the collection which we are excited about having spent the summer getting it ready and recruiting staff.

We aren’t the only ones getting ready for the guests to come. The restaurants, clubs, spas and shops have all started their preparations and it has transformed the quiet and tranquil long summer days into a bustling melting pot of suppliers, tradesmen and business owners making sure they are ready for skiers!

It’s a great time to book your ski holiday too as the summer holidays are now behind us and you can think about your winter break. Our office in the UK has been busy helping people tailor their ski holiday to the specific needs of our customers. Having representatives in resort helps as we have contacts that can help to make things happen for our customers.

If you haven’t booked your holiday and want to chat to someone about it first, then give our office a call on +44 1730 260263 or visit

It’s also a great time to get yourself prepared for the coming season. It’s often recommended to do a little ski specific training before you go to get the most out of your trip. At the very least starting some simple stretches and going for a run here and there will help you to ski for longer, avoid injury and recover more quickly for the following days skiing.

We best get back to our preparations and leave you to yours!

We look forward to seeing you on the slopes this winter.

Winter is fast approaching…..are you booked up?

With the countdown to the winter season most definitely ticking, it is less then 6 weeks until resorts start to open and lifts start to run! Snow is forecast across the Alps already, which can only be a god sign?

At Kaluma Travel we are gearing up for a busy one. We have some exciting additions and some new favourites on the website now, as well as the launch of a new site we are very proud about.

1. Verbier. We are all excited about Verbier. We have worked there in the past but are delighted to be expanding our operation in this fantastic resort. We visited the resort several times this summer and were very impressed (and there wasnt even any snow!) Our new Chalet Maurine has probably THE BEST location in Verbier, to truly enjoy all the resort has to offer. Just minutes (literally less then 2) from the Medran lift and with the bars and restaurants right on your doorstep, there is no better private chalet to stay in that offers such a good location. It also has that all important hot tub on the balcony, adding a classic touch to this luxury chalet!

The W Hotel is going to offer something new an exciting to this resort. A trendy, cool and funky place to stay, the philosophy is on having a good time with exceptional levels of service. Any hotel that gets the piste re-routed to finish in its courtyard must be something special! We had a good look around and were impressed, especially with the E WOW suites, fetching 10,000 CHF per night! What a place. Very proud to be partners with this stunning property.

2. Heli-Skiing has always been a dream for a lot of skiers and in the Arlberg, Courchevel and Verbier it is more affordable then alot of people think. As long as the guide is sure ou are good enough and you can cope in some fresh powder, it is an experience you will never forget. For those ready to venture further afield, then our heli-skiing in British Columbia should not be missed!! All that you need to do is spend 4 minutes to watch the BC Heli Video and you will be hooked! We’re ready and waiting for your call….

3. Our new and updated staff page can be seen under About Us, lightens the mood a bit in the office!

4. The Elite Collection is a new site launched by us all here at Kaluma Travel. We have picked some of the best and most expensive chalets and suites, as well as few of our favourites, in the resorts that we cover and specialise in. Not only are they stunning, they are also pretty expensive. Rest assured, the service, the quality, the food and drink are all luxurious in every way!

5. Kaluma Resort Staff are almost there for the season. We have a few vacancies for 2 chefs and 1 rep/manager. Also may still be looking for a host who can cook breakfasts for Courchevel. All info is on our site, if you follow the click through.

Exciting times but busy times ahead. So we look forward to helping as many of you ski as possible this coming winter!

Equally exciting is the thought of the Office Christmas Party. Sadly, we don’t all get the chance to enjoy the hospitality of Christmas in our chalets, The Montfort, The Maurine and the Maisonnee’s, but we do get to enjoy a bit of Christmas cheer…past years have seen michelin restaurants, pub dinners, posh lunches, all with the christmas crackers and paper hats…(wouldnt be Xmas dinner otherwise). The difference, it is usually in October! So let the winter commence!

Final day in Verbier and Hotel Nevai

Nevai Lounge

And finally the Nevai – another great Verbier hotel featured in our handpicked portfolio. Offering a light, contemporary and welcoming interior, the rooms are spacious and the two suites on the top floor are simply stunning offering guests the chance to unwind in their own rooftop Jaccuzzi’s!

The restaurant is renowned for serving great food and with the addition of a sushi bar next season we are sure this is set to continue. Plus hotel guests benefit from direct access to the infamous Farm Club – a very popular nightclub during the winter months!

Nevai Junior Suite

Nevai Restaurant

Earlier in the day we took a trip up the mountain to have a little explore. The scenery was simply stunning….bright blue skies, rolling green hills and snow capped peaks in the distance! Slightly different surroundings to the winter months but we think both are equally as beautiful….although it did get us itching to be up there with a pair of skis on!

All in all a great trip to Verbier and we are really excited to now be focusing more on this vibrant resort and can’t wait to welcome our first guests there this winter!

Our stay at the Hotel Vanessa

For the second and third night of our Verbier trip we were staying in the Hotel Vanessa, a hotel we have worked with for many years and a popular destination for groups. The hotel has a great location right in the centre of the resort, within seconds you will be in the heart of Place Centrale and excellent facilities, the spa area features a huge Jacuzzi and the restaurant serves a great breakfast as well as being a popular place to enjoy dinner in the evening.

Vanessa Bedroom

Our room was one of the larger rooms – a Deluxe Senior Suite, spread over two floors with two doubles/twins and a single room as well as two bathrooms and a balcony! The room had plenty of space for up to 5 people and we would definitely recommend for a bigger group or if you just want plenty of space.

Whilst we were staying at the Hotel Vanessa it was Swiss National Day which means a bank holiday for local residents and a street festival for all to enjoy! As we were so close we wondered into the centre of Verbier to take in the array of food, market and bar stalls! There was a great atmosphere late into the night with local bands and events going on as well….and we’re sure this is just a taster of the fantastic atmosphere surrounding Verbier during the winter months.

If you are considering a trip to Verbier in the summer the end of July/early August is a great time as there is loads going on in the resort, including the annual Verbier Classical Music Festival.
